What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally occuring state of mind where the analytical, conscious part of your mind is relaxed and distracted. We all enter a kind of hypnotic state daily, for example, this often happens when we're doing a task that has become second nature to us, like washing dishes or driving a familiar route. When our conscious, analytical and judging mind is quiet and we day dream, our unconscious mind, or the 'doing' part of our mind, becomes open and receptive to new ideas, suggestions and visualisations. This can enable us to make changes more easily.
One way we willingly go into hypnosis is when we are watching a good movie, the way we focus our attention on the screen and, without being aware of it, we push aside that conscious part of the mind to enable us to enjoy that movie to the full. We suspend disbelief. We become highly suggestable, when they want you to jump, you're going to jump and when they want you to cry, you're going to cry. Strange isn't it? You know it's not real but that doesn't matter, for those 2 hours you are entranced. Similarly, when in an hypnotic trance, you are willing to push away that critical part of your mind and enter a state of focused awareness. Of course, when watching that movie, your mind is aware that you are watching a movie, if this were not the case, when the monster came towards you you would run out of the cinema. Similarly, no matter how entranced you are in a hypnosis session, you always know you are in hypnosis.
How can Hypnosis help me?
Many of our habits, feelings and behaviours are created and led by our unconscious mind. For example, our drive to smoke or to over eat or issues with anxiety or phobias. During hypnosis the unconscious part of your mind becomes receptive to new ideas and suggestions to help you to alter these unwanted habits and behaviours for the better. I have a particular interest in how hypnotherapy can help to manage symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrom, hypnotherapy has proven very successful in treating this and is recommended by the NICE guidelines.
Misunderstandings about Hypnosis.
It's important to know what Hypnosis isn't... - You are not under the control of the therapist. - A person being Hypnotised can not be made to do anything that they don't want to do. - A person in Hypnosis can not be made to reveal their inner most secrets. - Hypnosis is not a state of unconsciousness or sleep. - It is impossible to "get stuck" in Hypnosis.
Remember, Hypnosis is a natural state of mind.
Let me introduce myself...
I am a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Mind Coach, and have also worked in the NHS now as a qualified Nurse and Midwife for 37 years. I would aim to conduct an initial health assessment over the telephone and during this time you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about hypnotherapy. I am compassionate, patient and approachable. I only want the best outcome for you so if I feel that I cannot help you I will suggest others who can, enabling you to get the care and support that best suits you.
Hypnotherapy is more than just a treatment plan, it is a means of self discovery and empowerment by using your powerful unconscious mind to enable positive changes in your life.
